Here are some of my favourite words in English. Sometimes I like the sound of them, sometimes I like the meaning, and sometimes both. Or the way sound and meaning interact or oppose.
I have found that many of my favourite words in English have a negative meaning or charge, whereas I love the sound of them. That’s the kind of liberating distance a foreign language creates. You weren’t brought up with the negative emotion of the word, so as you learn it, you still have the freedom to appreciate it for its sheer beauty.
